IBM officially released its earnings report on Wednesday, confirming the widely anticipated disappointing financial performance.
Despite the 115-year-old company's continued ability to generate substantial cash, reporting $17.2 billion in revenue, $9.9 billion in gross profit, nearly 58% margins, and $2.2 billion in net earnings for the quarter, its financial outcomes significantly underperformed against Wall Street's projections.
The extent of this earnings miss prompted an unprecedented move from IBM CEO Arvind Krishna and the board, who pre-emptively alerted investors that the results were "worse than our expectations," providing an early insight into the company's performance.
Last week, Krishna released a "letter to investors" detailing preliminary results, which highlighted alarmingly low revenue in the critical "infrastructure" segment and forecasted a negative impact on profit margins. This disclosure led to an immediate 25% drop in the company's stock, marking its most significant single-day decline ever. This contrasted sharply with the stock's strong performance during Krishna’s six-year tenure, which had been significantly boosted by the pervasive AI data center boom.

Krishna clarified that these clients opted to purchase other hardware instead of new mainframes, driven by "astronomically high" cost increases ranging from 15% to 30% for essential data center equipment and personal computers.
Krishna stated, "When they were faced with that issue, then they decided to move budget to those areas where they were having that extreme price."
Other major enterprise hardware manufacturers, including Dell and HP, have previously issued warnings that escalating component costs, particularly for memory, exacerbated by the AI build-out boom, have necessitated price hikes. Apple has also corroborated similar challenges.
Nevertheless, Krishna expressed confidence that these customers would ultimately proceed with their mainframe purchases, complete with new software contracts. He even noted that some had already done so within the current quarter, affirming, "We see no evidence of clients moving off the mainframe."
The long-term outcome remains to be seen. The tech industry has, for decades, regularly forecasted the obsolescence of the mainframe. It's plausible that even the transformative power of AI may not signal its demise.
