The recent HumanX AI conference in San Francisco drew thousands of technology professionals to the Moscone Center. A central theme of the discussions revolved around the transformative impact of agentic AI on the business landscape. These AI agents, designed to automate various business and coding functions, are increasingly being adopted across diverse industries, predominantly manifesting as enterprise and consumer-oriented chatbots.
Seeking to identify the prevailing chatbot in the market, a consistent name emerged as the most frequently cited: Claude.
Anthropic's Claude received frequent mentions across numerous conference panels and was a recurring subject in conversations with vendors on the exhibition floor. Conversely, ChatGPT garnered notably less discussion. One vendor specifically highlighted that his team predominantly utilized Claude, expressing a sentiment that ChatGPT and its creator, OpenAI, had experienced a decline in perceived quality — colloquially described as having "fallen off."
This perspective, it seems, is far from isolated. A pervasive sentiment suggests that OpenAI, despite securing a substantial $122 billion funding round and preparing for its initial public offering, has struggled to maintain its earlier momentum, appearing uncertain about its future direction.
A contributing factor to this perception may be a perceived lack of strategic focus within the company. OpenAI recently discontinued several ongoing projects, such as its AI video generator Sora and a contentious plan for a "sexy" ChatGPT version, choosing instead to concentrate on business and coding services. Concurrently, various events have generated negative publicity for the company, including a recent New Yorker article that raised questions about CEO Sam Altman's trustworthiness. Furthermore, its engagement with the Trump administration and the introduction of advertising into ChatGPT have not been well-received.
During a HumanX panel, Alex Heath questioned Bret Taylor, co-founder and CEO of Sierra and chairman of OpenAI's board, about the New Yorker profile. Taylor staunchly defended Altman, stating, “I think Sam is one of the most visible leaders and executives in the world.” He continued, “If you want to seek out detractors for him, you’ll find them, and they’ll be very vocal about it,” before concluding, “I think Sam’s remarkable. I think he’s a remarkable leader of AI, and I really trust his character as someone who’s worked with him.”
These ongoing controversies and shifts in strategy can create an impression of OpenAI being reactive rather than proactive, merely responding to unfolding events instead of actively shaping the industry. Nevertheless, in terms of market prominence and revenue, OpenAI and Anthropic appear to be closely matched. Some data even indicates Anthropic is rapidly gaining ground with business users. A recent Wall Street Journal financial analysis highlighted both companies as “the fastest-growing businesses in the history of tech.” In this context, OpenAI's perceived "fall" might simply signify a transition from undisputed market leader to a competitive player, a common dynamic across most industries.
Despite these challenges, OpenAI's resolve to maintain its dominant position is evident. This week, the company unveiled a new $100 subscription tier for ChatGPT, offering significantly enhanced access to Codex, its specialized coding tool. This strategic move appears intended to boost the tool's adoption and potentially draw users away from rival offerings like Claude Code.
In a HumanX discussion with Bloomberg reporter Rachel Metz, Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI's CTO of B2B applications, underscored the rapid evolution of the technological landscape.
Narayanan articulated, “We are in this incredible moment in technology, where every month, and sometimes every day, we are all looking forward to something new.” He cited agentic coding as a prime example, elaborating, “We knew AI was going to impact software engineering, people have been using assistive coding over the last year, but even in just the last few months, the entire field has changed.”
Agentic AI's achievements currently represent a significant focus for the tech community, particularly as other AI applications, such as those in creative or scientific domains, have yet to fully materialize. Nevertheless, the scale of tasks companies are delegating to these new automated assistants is remarkable, and as Narayanan observed, this shift has occurred within a remarkably brief timeframe. In such a dynamic and unpredictable environment, the future trajectory remains expansive and undefined.
