Hugging Face Launches Open Computer Agent for Public Use
Hugging Face introduces a free, cloud-based AI agent, highlighting the rise of affordable open-source AI in practical applications.

Originally reported bytechcrunch
Hugging Face has launched a new AI tool called Open Computer Agent, a cloud-hosted agent capable of interacting with a virtual Linux desktop. Similar in concept to OpenAI’s Operator, this tool can execute user-defined tasks by simulating the use of computer applications, such as browsing the web using Firefox. While the AI agent is accessible to anyone online, users must wait in a virtual queue, which varies in length depending on demand.
Despite its innovative design, Open Computer Agent is still in an experimental phase. It performs basic tasks reasonably well but struggles with more complex ones, such as searching for flights or bypassing CAPTCHA challenges, often resulting in stalled processes or errors. The Hugging Face team clarified that the tool’s primary purpose isn’t peak performance but rather to showcase the growing capabilities and cost-effectiveness of open-source AI models in cloud environments.
Aymeric Roucher from Hugging Face’s agents team noted that newer vision models are enhancing these agentic workflows. These models are capable of identifying visual elements by coordinates, enabling them to interact directly with interfaces inside a virtual machine. This opens the door to more refined AI-human interaction possibilities in future iterations.
The introduction of Open Computer Agent aligns with a broader industry trend toward agentic AI systems, which are gaining traction among businesses aiming to automate workflows and boost efficiency. According to a KPMG survey, 65% of enterprises are currently exploring AI agents, and research from Markets and Markets forecasts the AI agent market will expand from $7.84 billion in 2025 to $52.62 billion by 2030.
Although still imperfect, Hugging Face’s latest offering emphasizes how quickly open-source tools are evolving to support practical, user-friendly applications. The Open Computer Agent is a small but notable step in the growing momentum behind AI agents, reflecting both technological advancement and increased industry interest in scalable AI deployment.
