Hauler Hero has successfully secured new capital, propelled by the escalating demand for its advanced AI-powered waste management software.

The New York-based startup recently concluded a Series A funding round, raising $16 million. This round was spearheaded by Frontier Growth, with additional notable participation from I2BF Global Ventures, K5 Global, and Somersault Ventures, among others, as reported by TechCrunch. To date, Hauler Hero's total venture capital raised now exceeds $27 million.

Hauler Hero has engineered an integrated software platform specifically for waste management companies, which streamlines a wide array of operations including customer relationship management, billing, and route optimization. Aligning with current industry trends, Hauler Hero is also preparing to introduce AI agents to its clientele.

The company was co-founded in 2020 by CEO Mark Hoadley and his brother-in-law Ben Sikma. Their vision stemmed from their experiences encountering outdated software systems while working on mergers and acquisitions within the waste management sector, inspiring them to modernize the industry's technological landscape.

Mark Hoadley conveyed to TechCrunch in 2024, “All of the existing software in the space, they were clunky, old.” He further elaborated on their antiquated nature, stating, “Sometimes we’d talk about how this one reminds us of the Oregon Trail, this reminds us of the cell phone Michael Douglas used in ‘Wall Street.’ They’re very clunky and antiquated.”

The company's performance metrics indicate substantial success; Hauler Hero reports having facilitated 35 million trash pickups since its inception in 2020. This growth trajectory continues, with Hoadley informing TechCrunch that the company has doubled its head count, revenue, and customer base since the announcement of its seed round in late 2024.

Since its seed funding round, Hauler Hero has introduced several new features to its platform, Hoadley noted. A significant addition is a product that captures images from third-party cameras mounted on garbage trucks, transmitting them directly to a central software command center. This data empowers waste management companies to confirm service completions, validate billing, and enhance oversight of their geographically dispersed fleets, according to the company.

While acknowledging that some sanitation workers and their respective unions initially view this technological advancement with apprehension, Hoadley clarified that most unions prohibit the use of such footage for disciplinary actions against drivers. He further emphasized that these images can, in fact, serve to mitigate driver liability in cases of accidents or disputed missed pickups.

Hoadley likened the previous operational state to, “Think of it as like running a factory with no roof and no visibility into what’s happening in that factory.” He further explained the necessity of this insight: “If you don’t have visibility into what’s happening out there, it’s very hard to have quality control. And the quality control in this case is what was out there, was it picked up?”

Hauler Hero is currently engaged in the development and deployment of a trio of AI agents. Hero Vision is designed to autonomously identify service discrepancies and potential revenue streams. Hero Chat serves as a conversational AI for handling customer inquiries, while Hero Route will leverage route data to automatically optimize routes for increased efficiency.

Hoadley highlighted the extensive data available, stating, “There’s an enormous amount of data in our system about pickups, work orders, billing information, and if you give these agents an understanding of your data model, you can just go tell them, hey, go build me a chart.”

A portion of the recently secured funding will be allocated by Hauler Hero to commercialize these AI agents and to expand its service offerings for municipal entities, a segment of its customer base that is experiencing significant growth.

Regarding collaborations with public entities, Hoadley remarked, “It wasn’t something that I necessarily thought was going to be part of this journey.” He explained its natural progression: “It kind of came organically as many things do. We just had inbound from some municipalities and eventually we sold one of them and then we sold another.”

Hoadley attributed some of this increased demand to the 2024 merger of their two primary competitors, Routeware and Wastech, which consequently limited the options available to government entities seeking service providers.

Currently, Hoadley stated that the company's strategic focus is on refining and scaling its existing product, with potential for further new additions.

Hoadley concluded by affirming their long-term vision: “We’re going to continue to chart the course for the next decade of being at the cutting edge of delivering value for customers, leveraging all the latest tools.” He conveyed enthusiasm for future innovations, adding, “There’s a lot more fun things and valuable things that we can do for our customers, and we’re really excited about it.”
