AI startup Groq has successfully secured $350 million in new funding, reinforcing its ongoing strategic shift from an AI chip manufacturer to a neocloud provider specializing in powerful GPUs and comprehensive AI infrastructure services.

The latest capital injection, spearheaded by investment firm Disruptive with anticipated participation from Nvidia, values Groq at $3.5 billion. This valuation represents a decrease from the $6.9 billion assessed last September, a period just prior to Nvidia's acquisition of Groq's founder and CEO, Jonathan Ross, along with other key talent, as part of a significant licensing agreement.

Despite the notable difference in valuation, a company spokesperson informed TechCrunch that Groq views this not as a "down round," but rather as the establishment of a fresh valuation pertinent to the "post-Nvidia-licensing-deal version of Groq."

Groq's initial focus centered on developing its proprietary Language Processing Units (LPUs) designed to compete directly with Nvidia in the realm of inference — the computational process essential for real-time AI workload execution. Following the departure of its core engineering team, Groq strategically pivoted, transitioning from a dedicated AI chipmaker to a cloud and data center operator leveraging Nvidia systems, effectively positioning the restructured Groq as an Nvidia customer.

This strategic pivot was initially catalyzed by a $650 million funding round raised in June. The company has ambitious plans to significantly scale its infrastructure, aiming to expand from its current 54 megawatts to over 200 megawatts by 2027.

Currently, Groq manages 13 data centers spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, catering to a diverse clientele of over 6 million developers, enterprises, and AI-native companies. Groq states that the recently acquired funds will be instrumental in supporting “those seeking usage of medium and larger sized clusters of Nvidia accelerated computing for training and inference.”

Alex Davis, Groq's chairman and CEO of Disruptive, articulated the company's vision in a statement: “We are building Groq into the world’s leading AI inference cloud.” He further emphasized the critical role of inference, asserting, “Inference will without a doubt become the largest and most critical layer of AI infrastructure.”

While the demand for inference computing is undeniably high as enterprises increasingly scale their AI workloads, the long-term profitability of neocloud businesses and their ability to yield returns on substantial investments remain subjects of ongoing debate. For instance, CoreWeave reported impressive second-quarter revenue growth and secured major contracts with entities like Meta and Anthropic. However, investor concerns persist regarding its elevated capital expenditures, considerable reliance on debt, exposure to rapidly depreciating hardware, and its capacity to convert growth into sustainable free cash flow.

Groq's financial details are presently private, but its strategic pivot firmly embeds the company within Nvidia's expansive AI infrastructure ecosystem. This collaborative model is not uncommon among contemporary neocloud providers; Nvidia not only supplies the GPUs that power clouds from companies such as CoreWeave, Lambda, and Nebius but also invests billions into some of these firms as they race to expand their computing capacity.
