The global expansion of solar energy infrastructure stands as one of the most significant developments of our time. Nations and corporations worldwide are accelerating the deployment of solar power and battery storage solutions, driven by the imperative to achieve energy independence and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

However, this ambitious build-out faces a critical hurdle: a shortage of skilled labor to meet the escalating demand for installation. While robotics offers a compelling solution, industrial robots have historically struggled in the unpredictable and unstructured environments typical of construction sites. The emergence of the latest generation of AI models, however, appears to be fundamentally altering this dynamic.

This paradigm shift forms the core principle behind Gritt, a startup co-founded by Carnegie Mellon-trained roboticists, CEO Puneet Puri and CTO Vishal Dugar. The company recently emerged from stealth mode, announcing a successful $26 million Series A funding round. This round was led by Obvious Ventures, with additional participation from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investment, bringing Gritt's total funding to $34 million, following an earlier seed round supported by First Round Capital, Climactic, Congruent Ventures, and VSC Ventures. Puri articulates the startup's mission as building an intelligent system designed to "help civilization build infrastructure faster."

Puri explained to TechCrunch, "Our thesis is that if we truly want to speed up construction, you need an intelligence which can work in the outdoor, chaotic environments of these construction sites, and it has to be generalizable enough that it can work in these varied environments."

Rather than developing proprietary robots from the ground up, Gritt strategically utilizes off-the-shelf hardware—currently including rented skidders and robotic arms from manufacturers like Kawasaki. These readily available platforms are then controlled by Gritt's advanced AI models. The initial application for their systems involves the precise handling of large, glass solar panels: unloading them, transporting them to the metal frames, and positioning them with sub-millimeter accuracy for human workers to securely fasten.

Andrew Beebe, the partner at Obvious Ventures who led Gritt’s Series A round, praised the founders' practical approach: "There are people who used to build rockets that went into space and had infinite budget for the smallest little part, and then there are people who know what it means to get into dirty, dull, and dangerous jobs and scale them like mad. These guys are in the second camp, and that’s a special kind of entrepreneur that has the technical chops, the AI, and the machine vision skills to make it work."

Gritt currently has two systems operational in the field, continuously collecting data to refine and enhance their performance. Puri reports a dramatic increase in efficiency: a typical eight-person crew, which would normally install around 800 panels daily, can achieve an installation rate of 3,000 to 4,000 panels per day when working with Gritt’s systems.

The company has secured contracts to facilitate the installation of 2.8 gigawatts of solar panels within the next 18 months, boasting a client roster that includes three of the top ten US power construction companies. Gritt aims to have 48 of its systems actively deployed within the coming six months.

A Gritt customer, who chose to remain anonymous due to competitive considerations, expressed strong enthusiasm to TechCrunch regarding the system's ability to enhance operations. This customer anticipates greater ease in executing projects at remote sites where attracting labor is challenging, alongside a projected reduction in worker injuries by eliminating the repetitive overhead lifting of 100-pound panels.

Gritt operates in a competitive landscape, facing companies like Luminous Robotics, Cosmic, and China’s Trinabot, all of whom develop their own proprietary panel-installing robots. This distinction—Gritt's focus on off-the-shelf vehicles and arms versus competitors' custom hardware—could significantly influence their respective growth trajectories and cost structures as market demand continues to surge.

Looking ahead, Gritt plans to expand its system's manipulation capabilities to include tasks such as fastening solar panels, drilling posts, and even constructing the support racks. In the longer term, the company intends to venture into other prevalent, labor-intensive construction activities, such as tying rebar before concrete is poured.

The founders credit the rise of new AI models as the primary enabler of their ambitious vision.

Puri elaborated, "Making a system for one solution was still possible to some extent five years ago, right?" He emphasized that modern AI now allows for generalizability, meaning the same underlying software pipeline can be reused and improved across diverse tasks. As an illustration, he noted that training the system to stack cinder blocks took weeks, whereas a similar demonstration for rebar tying was accomplished in just a single day using the identical software.

However, the ability to train new tasks is merely the initial step in Gritt's broader vision. The founders believe that the comprehensive suite of sensors and intelligent capabilities their systems bring to worksites can extend beyond panel installation to significantly enhance management and decision-making processes. For instance, they envision their system detecting an open trench as a storm approaches, prompting an alert for workers to cover it before rain damages components, or proactively flagging missing inventory.

Puri encapsulated Gritt's transformative potential: "Gritt becomes now this layer of physical AI, which is doing this dextrous, labor-intensive task, plus it can help you take decisions on the site."
