Granola has successfully secured $125 million in Series C funding, propelling its valuation to $1.5 billion, a significant increase from its previous $250 million valuation. This latest investment round was spearheaded by Danny Rimer at Index Ventures, with Mamoon Hamid from Kleiner Perkins also participating. The company's impressive growth is largely attributed to its understanding that users prefer discreet, app-based transcription on their computers over visible bots actively participating in meetings.

This funding round, which occurred less than a year after its $43 million Series B, saw continued support from existing investors including Lightspeed, Spark, and NFDG. With this latest infusion of capital, the startup's total raised funding now stands at $192 million.

Initially launched as a prosumer application designed for transcribing meetings and generating notes on personal computers, Granola has strategically expanded its feature set to cater to enterprise-level requirements. Last year, it introduced collaborative note-taking capabilities for teams, and it has since established a strong presence within prominent organizations such as Vanta, Gusto, Thumbtack, Asana, Cursor, Lovable, Decagon, and Mistral AI.

Coinciding with the funding announcement, Granola is also rolling out a new feature called "Spaces." These dedicated workspaces are designed for teams, allowing for the creation of "Folders" within them. Spaces offer granular control over access permissions, enabling users to manage who can view specific content. Furthermore, users can now query notes independently from both Spaces and folders.

Recognizing that AI meeting note-taking is rapidly becoming a commoditized feature with numerous market entrants, Granola is focusing on differentiation through enhanced integration capabilities. Following the launch of its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server in February, the company is now introducing two new APIs specifically designed to seamlessly integrate the context of meeting notes into various AI workflows.

These new APIs include a Personal API, which grants individuals access to their own notes and those shared with them, available to users on business and enterprise plans. Additionally, an Enterprise API has been developed to empower administrators with the ability to manage and leverage team-wide context, exclusively for enterprise users.

The introduction of these APIs directly addresses previous user dissatisfaction, notably from an a16z partner, regarding Granola's decision to lock down its local database, which disrupted pre-existing on-device AI agent workflows. Granola co-founder, Chris Pedregal, clarified that the move was not intended to restrict data access but rather stemmed from the local cache's inability to handle complex AI workflows, necessitating a change in data storage methodology. While this change inadvertently broke agent functionalities, Pedregal had previously committed to launching APIs for bulk data access and exploring future solutions for local AI agent compatibility.

In addition to the new APIs, the company is updating its MCP server to allow users to view notes within folders and access notes shared with them. Granola's application already boasts integrations with a wide array of tools, including Claude, ChatGPT, Lovable, Figma Make, Replit, Manus, v0, Bolt.new, Duckbill, and Dreamer, with plans to expand its partner ecosystem further.

As AI-powered meeting note-taking becomes ubiquitous, the true value proposition for startups in this sector lies in enabling users and organizations to derive actionable insights from their notes and transcripts. This extends to functionalities such as drafting follow-up emails, efficiently scheduling subsequent meetings, or extracting relevant knowledge from company databases and CRMs to expedite lead finalization. Competitors like Read AI, Fireflies, and Quill are already actively pursuing these advanced capabilities.
