Superhuman has announced its intention to 'reimagine' the Expert Review feature, committing to provide experts with a definitive choice regarding their participation in future AI initiatives.

This development follows Superhuman's decision to disable the "expert review" AI feature, which had previously indicated its editing suggestions were "inspired by" real writers. This included The Verge's editor-in-chief and other staff members, a practice that drew significant criticism.

Ailian Gan, Superhuman’s Director of Product Management, issued a statement to The Verge explaining the company’s rationale: “After careful consideration, we have decided to disable Expert Review as we reimagine the feature to make it more useful for users, while giving experts real control over how they want to be represented — or not represented at all.” Gan acknowledged the company's misstep, adding, “Based on the feedback we’ve received, we clearly missed the mark. We are sorry and will do things differently going forward.”

This recent action comes after Superhuman's initial response yesterday, which involved launching an email inbox for writers to opt out of the "expert review" feature. The company now admits this preliminary measure was insufficient. Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra also offered an apology and elaborated on the company’s revised plans in a LinkedIn post.

Mehrotra reiterated the commitment to change, stating, "After careful consideration, we have decided to disable Expert Review as we reimagine the feature to make it more useful for users, while giving experts real control over how they want to be represented - or not represented at all." He explained the feature's original intent: "We built the agent to help users tap into the insights of thought leaders and experts, and to give experts new ways to share their knowledge and reach new audiences." Acknowledging the failure to meet expectations, he added, "Based on the feedback we’ve received, we clearly missed the mark. We are sorry and will do things differently going forward."

Mehrotra then outlined a broader strategic vision: "Our broader vision is to solve the 'last mile of AI' by bringing the power of LLMs to people where they are, inside their flow of work, at the exact moment they need it. As we innovate at the edge of AI, it is important to us that we continue to seek the best ways to help people feel agency over technology and that they can shape it to meet their needs." Concluding his message, Mehrotra expressed gratitude for the feedback: "Thanks for holding us accountable. We are committed to getting it right next time and will be transparent about how we improve from here."
