Google has announced a significant expansion of its Personal Intelligence feature, making it accessible to all free-tier users in the US. This functionality, which allows users to integrate various Google applications to enrich Gemini’s contextual understanding for responses and suggestions, was previously exclusive to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. As of Tuesday's announcement, free-tier users in the United States can now leverage Personal Intelligence via AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome. It is important to note, however, that this feature is currently confined to personal Google accounts and is not available for business, enterprise, or educational users.

The Personal Intelligence feature operates by drawing data from connected Google applications such as YouTube, Google Photos, and Gmail. This integration enables Gemini to automatically tailor its responses, eliminating the need for users to manually input additional context into their prompts. For instance, with the feature activated, Gemini could provide personalized shopping recommendations based on recent purchases or offer technical troubleshooting guidance derived from existing device information. Reflecting on her experience earlier this year, Allison Johnson noted that while personalization allows Gemini to "analyze my interests and make some pretty good guesses about what I’d be interested in," she observed that "it’s the details where AI gets lost."

Users maintain full control over their data, as Personal Intelligence remains an opt-in feature. Individuals who prefer not to have Gemini utilize information from their other Google applications can simply keep the feature deactivated. Furthermore, Google clarified in its Tuesday blog post that users possess the flexibility to disconnect apps from Personal Intelligence at any point. The company emphasized its data privacy commitment, stating, "Gemini and AI Mode don’t train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. We train on limited info, like specific prompts in Gemini or AI Mode and the model’s responses."
