Individuals with low vision can leverage the new Guided Vision feature within Gemini to request descriptions of their surroundings and pose follow-up questions to Google’s AI.
Guided Vision is now available in Gemini Live on compatible Android devices, utilizing artificial intelligence to deliver real-time audio descriptions of whatever the user's camera is pointed at. By granting camera access in a conversation, Google’s AI can assist with various tasks, including reading small text, describing the environment, identifying objects, and detailing specific item features.
Functioning similarly to Apple's VoiceOver Live Recognition feature for the iPhone and Vision Pro, this tool is tailored to benefit those who are blind, have low vision, or need assistance in specific contexts. Beyond the Gemini application, Guided Vision is accessible through Google TalkBack and can be configured as an accessibility shortcut in the Settings menu on devices running Android 9 or later, following its announcement alongside recent Pixel updates.
Users are also able to ask follow-up questions about items they are viewing, such as requesting that Gemini read the expiration date on a product it helped locate. Google indicates that the AI will provide audio cues to assist in framing the camera correctly if the subject is not currently in the shot. Nevertheless, the company cautions users against using the tool for critical functions like navigation, safe-travel guidance, or obstacle detection, or treating it as a substitute for traditional mobility aids like a cane.
