Google announced on Wednesday the introduction of a native Gemini application for Mac, positioning itself to compete more directly with rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of whom have offered Mac-specific apps for a considerable period.

“Now, you can bring up Gemini from anywhere on your Mac with a quick shortcut (Option + Space) to get help instantly, without ever switching tabs,” Google explained in its official blog post. This seamless integration is designed to enhance user productivity, whether drafting a market report and needing to verify a specific date, or constructing a budget in a spreadsheet and requiring the correct formula; users can obtain answers and immediately return to their work.

A key feature of the new app allows users to share any content displayed on their screen directly with Gemini, including local files, to receive immediate assistance pertinent to what they are currently viewing.

For instance, if a user is analyzing a complex chart, they could pose a question like “What are the three biggest takeaways here?” and promptly receive a concise summary.

The application further extends its capabilities to include generative AI features, supporting the creation of images through Nano Banana and videos via Veo.

This native macOS application is now available globally to all Gemini users running macOS versions 15 and higher, effective today. It can be downloaded from gemini.google/mac.
