Google has introduced a new Gemini application for Mac, designed to enable users to interact with the AI assistant seamlessly without requiring a switch between desktop windows. This innovative app allows users to invoke a floating chat bubble using the Option + Space shortcut, facilitating direct inquiries to Gemini and the sharing of their active window.

Before initiating any window sharing, users are required to grant Gemini explicit permission to access their system's information. Once authorized, the AI assistant can then draw context from the user's current view, leveraging this data to provide more relevant and informed answers to their questions.

The interface bears a resemblance to Apple's enhanced Spotlight feature, which now allows for device actions and access to various AI models, including OpenAI's ChatGPT. This strategic launch positions Google as a direct competitor to major players like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Perplexity, all vying for their chatbots to become the primary AI interface on desktop devices. However, competitors such as ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude app for Mac currently offer more advanced capabilities, empowering their AI assistants to perform tasks on the user's computer on their behalf.

Mirroring the functionality of Gemini on web and mobile platforms, the Mac app also supports uploading files, photos, or documents directly from Google Drive. Furthermore, it enables users to generate images, videos, or music through Gemini. The application also provides access to previous Gemini conversations, all synchronized with the user's Google account. This Mac release comes just one day after Google made its similar desktop AI application widely available for Windows.

The Gemini app is available for free download across all languages and countries where Gemini is officially supported. It requires macOS Sequoia (15.0) or a more recent operating system version.
