The Project Suncatcher satellite, equipped with Google’s AI chip, has successfully transmitted its first response from orbit. In a recent blog post, Google confirmed that the satellite's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) were activated, enabling the onboard Gemma 4 model to fulfill a user prompt by composing a haiku regarding space travel:
“Data streams in silent grace
Starlight feeds my core. ✨”
Google notes that the team also experimented with other space-themed verse and telemetry requests. This initiative, known as Project Suncatcher, is an experimental program designed to potentially establish AI data centers in space. The satellite was deployed into orbit earlier this month.
Google outlined future testing objectives, stating, “Next, we will continue with a series of tests to evaluate how TPUs perform under thermal stress and radiation exposure in orbit.” The company emphasized that “Verifying our TPUs can reliably execute workloads in space paves the way for our next milestone of twin interconnected satellites in 2027.”
