Google announced on Thursday the rollout of an innovative method for exploring the web, leveraging its conversational search experience, AI Mode. When utilizing AI Mode on Chrome desktop, users will now find that clicking a link simultaneously opens the corresponding webpage alongside AI Mode, creating a dual-pane viewing experience.

The tech giant states that this strategic enhancement aims to simplify the process of navigating pertinent websites, comparing specific details, and posing follow-up questions, all while meticulously preserving the original context of the search query.

As an illustration, if a user intends to purchase a new coffee maker, they can articulate their preferences within AI Mode to receive a diverse range of options. Upon selecting a product, the retailer’s website can be opened adjacent to AI Mode, enabling direct inquiries such as, “how easy is this to clean?” AI Mode will then intelligently draw upon information from both the active webpage and the broader web to provide comprehensive answers.

In a blog post, Google shared positive feedback from initial evaluations, explaining, “Our early testers loved that they didn’t have to constantly switch tabs to get help with a comprehensive article or a long video.” The company further noted, “And they found that having both Search and the web side-by-side helped them stay focused on their tasks while exploring useful web pages,” underscoring the improved efficiency and concentration offered by the new interface.

Additionally, Google unveiled a novel capability to conduct searches across Chrome tabs that are already open and active.

On both Chrome desktop and mobile platforms, users can tap a new “plus” menu situated within the search box on the “New Tab” page or directly within AI Mode. This allows them to select recent tabs, integrating their content into the current search. This functionality empowers users to combine multiple tabs, images, or files, thereby enriching their AI Mode searches with broader contextual information.

For example, while researching local hiking trails, users can incorporate several already open tabs into their search to request similar trails in an alternative geographic area. Similarly, a student preparing for a statistics examination could integrate context from open tabs, class notes, lecture slides, and other resources to solicit illustrative examples for a specific concept.

These latest updates to AI Mode are presently accessible in English within the U.S., with Google indicating plans for future expansion to a wider array of international regions.
