Google has introduced a comprehensive update to its Vids video editor application, unveiling a suite of new features designed to enhance content creation. Announced on Thursday, these additions include advanced capabilities for directing and customizing avatars using text prompts, integration of the Veo 3.1 model, direct video export to YouTube, and a dedicated Chrome extension for screen recording.

A standout feature empowers users to leverage natural language prompts to orchestrate avatars' actions within a scene. This functionality allows for intricate interactions, such as an avatar engaging with a product, a prop, or a piece of equipment. Google highlights that, despite the dynamic and varied nature of the generated output, Vids is engineered to maintain consistent character appearance and behavior.

Further expanding creative control, Google stated that users can customize their characters based on the video's theme. This customization, driven by text prompts, enables adjustments to appearance, changes in apparel, and the creation of entirely new backgrounds.

Building on recent advancements, which saw the addition of Google's Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro music creation models last month for incorporating sound effects or music, this latest rollout integrates the Veo 3.1 video generation model. Veo 3.1 facilitates the creation of eight-second video clips directly within the editing tool. Google is providing all users with 10 free Veo generations per month, while Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra account holders will benefit from up to 1,000 Veo videos monthly.

Moreover, Google is streamlining the workflow by adding the ability to export completed videos directly to YouTube. This eliminates the need for manual downloading and subsequent uploading, significantly enhancing user convenience. For privacy and review purposes, all exported videos are set to private by default, allowing creators to finalize their content before making it public.

The video suite is also being augmented with a new screen recording Chrome extension. This tool will enable users to capture their screen activity, complete with accompanying audio or video, directly within their browser.

Google has consistently rolled out new functionalities for Vids since its initial unveiling in 2024, originally targeting enterprise content creation. Last year, the company introduced AI avatars to Vids and expanded access to a wider consumer base. More recently, in February, Vids received 2D and 3D cartoon-style avatars and expanded its voiceover language support to include seven new languages: French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese.

In the competitive landscape of AI-powered video editing and generation, Google Vids faces competition from established players such as Synthesia, HeyGen, D-ID, and Lemon Slice.
