Google is introducing a new functionality designed to inform users when an advertisement they encounter has been generated using artificial intelligence technology.

Artificial intelligence streamlines the advertising process for businesses, enabling them to easily generate ads, showcase products in diverse virtual environments, and reduce expenses associated with traditional e-commerce photography. However, a lack of transparency can be problematic if consumers are unaware that images are not authentic product photographs. While Google maintains policies against misleading and deceptive advertisements, AI can still be employed to produce synthetic or digitally modified content. Previously, such disclosures were only mandated for political election advertisements.

The technology behemoth announced that this new consumer-oriented functionality will be integrated into the “My Ad Center” panel. This panel is globally accessible to all users by selecting the three-dot menu or the information icon displayed on advertisements encountered across Google Search, YouTube, and Google Discover platforms.

Currently, this panel empowers users to block or report ads, gain insights into the advertiser, or understand the rationale behind an ad's display. Moving forward, users will also find an additional option labeled “how this ad was made,” which will clearly state whether the advertisement was generated or modified using AI.

Google specifies that when advertisers utilize its proprietary generative AI advertising tools to produce content, the necessary disclosure will be activated automatically.

Conversely, for advertisements developed outside of Google's ecosystem, advertisers will be required to employ a new control to manually indicate any AI involvement in their creation, as Google will not independently verify this information. Furthermore, in certain regions, an ad may also be designated as AI-generated if mandated by local legal regulations.
