Google has initiated legal action aimed at dismantling the technological backbone of what it describes as a vast, AI-driven cybercrime network.
The tech giant formally announced on Friday its lawsuit targeting Outsider Enterprise, an alleged Chinese cybercrime collective. Google asserts that this group leverages artificial intelligence in its fraudulent campaigns, dispatching deceptive text messages that impersonate Google and other prominent brands with the intent of pilfering personal credentials and financial data.
Outsider Enterprise is accused of financially defrauding “hundreds of thousands of victims,” resulting in losses “estimated in the millions.” Google’s investigation revealed that the syndicate deployed 9,000 counterfeit websites, registered 1 million fraudulent web domains, and transmitted 2.5 million scam texts to Android users within a mere two-week timeframe.
The company highlighted the scale of the problem, stating, “55,000 spam texts were flagged by Android users in just two weeks this past May — that’s more than two text spam complaints a minute.”
Google also disclosed its proactive defense strategy, employing “AI-powered tools to fight AI-powered scams.” These sophisticated tools allow the company to identify fraudulent activities and proactively warn users about suspicious calls and text messages, contributing to the interception of over 10 billion scam messages each month.
Furthermore, Google confirmed its collaborative efforts with major telecommunication providers AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon to block these deceptive text messages. The company is also coordinating closely with the FBI, which is reportedly undertaking undisclosed law enforcement measures in response to the operation.
The FBI did not provide an immediate response when approached for comment regarding the ongoing situation.
