Google has significantly expanded access to Canvas in AI Mode, making it available to all English-speaking users across the U.S. This broader rollout follows its initial debut last year as part of Google Labs' experimental features.

Canvas in AI Mode is meticulously designed to assist users in organizing and planning projects, or in conducting more profound research. The company affirmed in a blog post that the feature now empowers users to draft documents and develop custom tools directly within Google Search.

Previously, Google highlighted Canvas's utility for tasks such as compiling study guides by uploading class notes and various sources. The feature also excels at transforming research reports into diverse formats like web pages, quizzes, or audio overviews, exhibiting some functional overlap with Google’s specialized research tool, Notebook LM.

Users can articulate an idea to Canvas, which then dynamically generates the code required to transform that concept into a shareable application or game. Furthermore, the feature serves as a valuable aid for refining creative writing drafts and gathering feedback on ongoing projects.

Canvas is already integrated within Gemini, where subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra benefit from access to the cutting-edge Gemini 3 model and an expansive 1 million-token context window, ideal for tackling more intricate projects.

This widespread availability through Google's AI search feature, known as AI Mode, ensures that Canvas will reach a significantly larger audience across the U.S., including individuals who have not yet explored Gemini's capabilities. This broad integration underscores a key competitive advantage for Google in the AI landscape: the unparalleled reach of Google Search, capable of introducing its innovations to billions of users globally.

Engaging with Canvas is straightforward: while in AI Mode, users simply select the new "Canvas" option from the tool menu (marked with a '+') and describe their desired creation. This action activates a Canvas side panel, enabling users to aggregate information from the web and Google's Knowledge Graph. For those developing prototypes or applications, the platform allows for functionality testing, viewing the underlying code, and refining the app's operation through direct interaction with Gemini.

Canvas positions itself in a competitive arena alongside analogous tools from industry leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic. A notable distinction lies in activation: ChatGPT’s Canvas feature is automatically invoked by the user's query, whereas Google's Canvas and Anthropic’s Claude necessitate a more explicit user interaction. Nevertheless, all these platforms empower users to enhance their writing and transform conceptual ideas into tangible projects.
