Google is rebranding its AI-powered note-taking application, announcing on Thursday that NotebookLM will now be known as Gemini Notebook. While retaining its status as a standalone app, this change signifies a deeper integration across Google's Gemini ecosystem and Google Search.
The application, initially unveiled as Project Tailwind in May 2023 and widely released months later, has steadily evolved. Over the years, Google has enhanced the app with features designed to streamline note organization and comprehension. These innovations include the capability to transform notes into AI podcasts, narrated slideshows, and short-form video clips reminiscent of TikTok. Recently, Google enabled users to link their notebooks directly to the Gemini app, with plans to extend notebook accessibility to AI Mode within Google Search, offering a chatbot-like experience.
Coinciding with the rebranding, Google is deploying a significant update, initially announced last month, which empowers Gemini Notebook to connect to a secure cloud computing environment for writing and executing code. This advanced functionality is currently available to Google AI Ultra and Workspace business subscribers, with a broader rollout planned for Pro users on the web "over the coming weeks."
