Google is introducing a significant new feature for its Phone app, designed to shield users from increasingly sophisticated AI impersonation scams. This update will automatically identify and flag incoming calls that appear to originate from one of your saved contacts but are, in fact, from a scammer, enabling you to promptly end the call.
Google highlighted the escalating danger of impersonation scams in its announcement, citing an FBI report that indicated Americans lost more than $893 million to AI-driven scams in 2025 alone. These elaborate schemes involve fraudsters spoofing a contact's phone number and employing AI technology to mimic the voice of a friend, family member, or even an authority figure. Upon detecting such a fraudulent call, the Phone by Google app will present a clear notification stating, “Someone may be pretending to call from your contact’s number,” accompanied by an immediate option to terminate the call.
This protective feature will be activated by default for users running Android 12 and newer, commencing with Pixel devices. Its functionality hinges on both the caller and recipient utilizing the Phone by Google app; a legitimate call from a trusted contact will trigger a “silent confirmation signal” from their device, verifying its authenticity. Conversely, if a scammer attempts to spoof a contact's number, this crucial initial confirmation signal will be absent, as explained by Google. The company further stated that this capability is built upon end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology, facilitating potential adoption by other communication applications.
Alongside this significant security enhancement, Android devices are set to receive a suite of additional features. Notably, children under 13 will gain access to Google’s Personal Safety app, allowing them to display vital emergency contacts and medical details on their lockscreens, and activate car crash detection. Google is also expanding support for Apple AirDrop, enhancing its AI-powered clothing try-on feature within Photos, and introducing the ability to identify specific items in an outfit using Circle to Search. Furthermore, Google Play Books users will benefit from a new AI-powered insights tool capable of summarizing previously read content in selected titles or providing answers to questions about particular passages.
