Google One AI Premium Now Free for College Students Until 2026
Originally reported bytheverge
Google is offering its One AI Premium plan free to college students in the US, waiving the usual $20 monthly fee until June 30th, 2026. To take advantage of this offer, students must sign up before June 30th, 2025, and verify their eligibility with a valid .edu email address. A Google spokesperson mentioned that students would be reminded before the expiration of their plan, providing ample time to cancel. The plan offers 2TB of cloud storage along with access to various AI tools designed to assist students in their studies. This includes Gemini 2.5 Pro-powered features like Gemini Advanced, a competitor to ChatGPT Plus, and Gemini Deep Research tools that help summarize complex topics and transform reports into podcast-style audio. Students can also use NotebookLM Plus for more advanced study tools and audio summarization capabilities, as well as integrate the Gemini assistant into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Additionally, Google introduces new AI tools, including Veo 2, which converts text into videos, and Whisk, which combines text and image prompts to create new content. This move follows similar initiatives from OpenAI and Anthropic, who also target students with free access to their AI tools. With AI emerging as a key player in academia, Google’s strategy aims to attract student users while defending against growing competition in the AI space, especially given the potential challenges AI poses to its search business.
