The Zuckerberg-founded Biohub will utilize this financial injection to develop AI datasets designed to assist researchers in digitally "asking, predicting, and answering biological questions."

Google DeepMind, Meta, and the AI drug discovery startup Isomorphic Labs have collectively committed $300 million to Biohub, a nonprofit biomedical research organization established by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan. This funding serves as a significant component of a broader $1.8 billion initiative aimed at constructing comprehensive AI datasets. These datasets are intended to empower researchers to "ask, predict, and answer biological questions digitally," thereby facilitating the discovery of novel strategies for disease prevention and management.

Since its inception in 2016, Biohub has focused on combating diseases through the development of a "virtual cell," a simulation framework for researchers. To bolster this ambitious project, the U.S. Department of Energy plans to invest over $500 million over the next five years. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will contribute essential datasets, repositories, and knowledge bases derived from previous federal investments totaling over $500 million.

"An accurate predictive model of biology could dramatically accelerate scientific discovery by enabling scientists to perform experiments digitally," stated Alex Rives, Biohub’s head of science, in a recent press release. Rives emphasized that the creation of a virtual cell represents one of the most critical challenges for the next era of science, necessitating "coordinated data generation efforts at a national and international scale," which is the driving force behind this partnership.
