Google announced on Thursday significant advancements to its "Ask Maps" feature within Google Maps, introducing a suite of new agentic capabilities. These enhancements empower users to perform real-world tasks such as ordering food, booking hotel accommodations, and discovering event tickets directly through the platform. Additionally, the technology giant is integrating "Personal Intelligence" into Ask Maps, enabling the AI tool to deliver highly personalized responses by drawing upon information from a user's Gmail and Google Calendar.

This strategic launch reflects Google's ambition to transform Google Maps from its foundational role as a navigation tool into a comprehensive personal assistant, capable of helping users complete a wide array of practical tasks.

With the newly introduced agentic food ordering functionalities, users can access Ask Maps within Google Maps and pose a query such as, "Where can I order vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte near home?" The system will then identify and present nearby restaurants that offer the specified items.

Once a restaurant is selected, users can tap the "Order online" option to place an order via supported platforms, including Square, Toast, or Uber Eats. Ask Maps will automatically add the chosen items to a cart. Users retain the flexibility to add more items before proceeding to payment on the integrated platform.

Furthermore, Ask Maps now facilitates finding hotel accommodations for upcoming trips. Users can enter a detailed query like, "For next weekend’s conference in downtown Miami, find me a decently priced, top-rated hotel with an artsy vibe within walking distance from a gym and restaurants." Ask Maps will then meticulously compare prices and check availability before presenting a curated list of options. Upon finding a suitable choice, users can click through to the partner's website to finalize their booking.

The platform also allows users to discover local entertainment by asking questions such as "what are some comedy shows or live music this evening near work," which will generate a list of options accompanied by direct links for ticket purchases.

These advanced agentic features are currently being progressively rolled out to users across the United States.

The addition of Personal Intelligence will enable Ask Maps to provide users with tailored answers to their questions regarding upcoming flights, dinner reservations, hotel details, and more. For instance, users could inquire, "What time will I land in Vancouver on my upcoming flight?" or "Can you recommend where to eat and what to do near my hotel?" Ask Maps will then intelligently retrieve relevant information from a user’s emails and calendar to formulate precise, personalized responses.

It is important to note that the Personal Intelligence feature is disabled by default and requires user activation.

Ask Maps will also now remember prior conversations, allowing users to seamlessly pick up where they left off. This means users can ask questions such as, "What activities had you suggested for my trip to Seattle?" and continue their planning process without needing to start anew.

In addition, Google is launching a live transit widget within Ask Maps, which will keep users updated on delays and changing conditions in public transportation in real time.

Both the Personal Intelligence feature and the live transit widget in Ask Maps are being progressively deployed across all global markets where Ask Maps is currently available.
