Google announced on Thursday that "Universal Cart," a new tool allowing users to collect and monitor products found across search and the Gemini app, is now accessible to U.S. users. The company first revealed this feature during Google I/O in May.

The primary objective is to simplify online shopping management. Users can locate desired items, save them to their cart, and proceed with their browsing. Upon returning, saved items and shopping progress remain intact, eliminating the need to retrace steps or restart the search. By aggregating products from various retailers, Universal Cart functions as a central hub for tracking potential purchases.

Google notes that the cart assists shoppers in tracking deals and inventory levels. The system can send alerts when a saved item's price decreases or if an out-of-stock product becomes available again.

Furthermore, the tool provides tailored assistance throughout the shopping journey. Google states it can factor in credit card perks to guide payment choices and highlight relevant promotional codes.

Checkout is facilitated by Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard introduced earlier this year. UCP aims to enable collaboration between AI agents and retailers throughout the shopping lifecycle, including the checkout phase.

Google has a strong presence in AI-powered shopping, and Universal Cart represents its latest effort to enhance convenience. This feature joins existing tools, such as conversational product discovery in Search's AI Mode and the "Let Google Call" utility, which employs an AI agent to verify inventory at local stores.

Google is not the sole player integrating AI into e-commerce. Competitors like Amazon and OpenAI have also implemented "agentic commerce" features, as organizations seek to extend the utility of chatbots beyond simple question-and-answer interactions.
