Google has announced the expansion of Gemini integration within Chrome to several new regions, including India, Canada, and New Zealand. This strategic rollout enables desktop users to engage with Google's advanced AI chatbot via a dedicated sidebar in Chrome. Through this interface, users can pose questions related to on-screen content, retrieve information from their linked Google services such as Gmail, Keep, Drive, and YouTube, and even facilitate comparisons between the contents of different open tabs.

A significant aspect of this new deployment is the enhanced language support. Beyond English and other recently added Chrome languages, Gemini will now cater to users in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, broadening its accessibility across diverse linguistic communities.

It's worth noting that Google initially introduced Gemini into Chrome for U.S. users last September, utilizing a floating window interface. The transition to sidebar-based Gemini tools, which are now being rolled out internationally, was implemented earlier this year.

Upon gaining access to this feature, users will observe an "Ask Gemini" icon prominently displayed on their tab bar. Activating this icon for any given tab allows them to ask questions, summarize content, or generate quizzes to deepen their understanding of a topic. Google has highlighted Gemini's ability to operate across multiple tabs, enabling users to reference several tabs simultaneously to obtain comprehensive answers, a particularly useful function when comparing products for purchase or tickets for travel.

Gemini's capabilities extend to connecting with various Google applications, providing more personalized and contextually relevant responses. Its integration with Gmail, Maps, Calendar, YouTube, and other Google services means users can, for instance, compose an email directly within the Chrome sidebar using Gemini and send it without navigating away from their current window. Users can also instruct Gemini to summarize a YouTube video, presenting key points accompanied by timestamp markers. Furthermore, the assistant is equipped to schedule meetings or provide daily briefings.

In addition, users will be able to leverage Google’s Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool directly within Gemini for Chrome to transform images. An illustrative application involves uploading a photograph of a room while shopping for furniture and asking the assistant to modify the image to preview how a specific item would appear in that space.

Beyond desktop integration, Google has confirmed the rollout of Gemini support for Chrome on iOS devices in India. When available, this option will be accessible through a page tools icon located in the address bar.

It's important to distinguish this expansion from Google's agentic capabilities, which were launched in January for U.S.-based AI Pro and AI Ultra users. These advanced functions, designed to take over browser tasks and complete them on behalf of the user, are not included in the current expansion for users in India, New Zealand, and Canada.
