Google is continuing its integration of artificial intelligence into its email platform. During the IO 2026 developer conference on Tuesday, the technology giant unveiled an expansion of its "AI Inbox" functionality for Gmail, introducing advanced conversational AI features. This enhancement will allow users to query Gmail directly about their inbox contents using natural language, rather than relying on traditional search terms.
The company stated that this new Gemini AI-powered feature, named Gmail Live, is designed to facilitate the rapid retrieval of information embedded within a user's emails.
For instance, users could inquire about specifics regarding an upcoming flight, the time of a dental appointment, the access code for an Airbnb reservation, or details pertaining to a child's school event.
Previously, locating such information necessitated typing specific keywords into the search bar, or perhaps an email address or domain, to refine results. This method often proved inefficient, particularly when a search term appeared across numerous messages, making precise identification challenging.
Devanshi Bhandari, Product Lead for Gmail, elaborated in a pre-conference briefing, "Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, respond to follow-up questions, and pivot if you need to interrupt it." This feature was officially introduced to the public at Google's annual developer conference, Google I/O.
This initiative represents another effort by Google to demonstrate the tangible, real-world benefits of its AI technology in products utilized by millions of consumers. This comes at a time when skepticism regarding AI's value is prevalent outside the tech sector, exacerbated by concerns over new data center constructions and their impact on energy costs.
Google hopes that presenting a straightforward application, such as simplifying the retrieval of misplaced emails—a common frustration for nearly everyone—will serve as a practical and positive illustration of AI's utility.
During a demonstration for reporters, Bhandari showcased Gmail Live by posing various questions about inbox items, including details on a child's show-and-tell project and class trip, as well as hotel and flight information for a Detroit journey. Much like interacting with standalone AI chatbots such as Gemini or ChatGPT, Gmail users can verbally ask these questions using natural language, and the chatbot will provide responses.
Bhandari highlighted that the demo also revealed Gmail Live's ability to discern subtle distinctions, such as between "field trip" and "trip," and seamlessly transition between different topics. Furthermore, the AI can extract granular specifics from emails, like a hotel room number, and infer the individuals being referenced even when they are not explicitly named.
The company also indicated that similar voice-activated technology is slated for integration into its to-do list application, Google Keep.
It is important to note that Gmail Live is not intended to replace the existing Gmail search functionality; rather, it offers an additional option for users.
Google's decision to offer this as an option likely stems from its experience with Google Photos, where an "upgrade" to AI-powered search generated significant user dissatisfaction. Following numerous complaints, Google Photos subsequently reverted the feature, making AI usage optional.
Gmail is also set to receive other new functionalities, including the creation of ready-to-send drafts, instant access to files, and enhanced task management through the ability to mark individual to-do items as complete.
Moreover, the "AI Inbox" experience, which debuted earlier this year, will expand its availability beyond Google AI Ultra subscribers to include Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers. This feature provides a consolidated overview of pending tasks and items requiring attention, all presented on a single page.
However, the voice-powered Gmail Live feature is scheduled for release later this summer and will initially be exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
