During a Google Cloud event on Thursday, the company announced its plan to advance Gemini AI into the agentic era by launching a unified agent. This new tool can do more than just answer questions; it can execute tasks and take action on behalf of users through a single interface.

This development occurs as AI tools are evolving beyond simple conversational experiences to autonomous agents capable of managing assigned tasks, generating code, scheduling meetings, and arranging travel. This shift follows the emergence of consumer agents like Meta’s Muse and messaging-based options such as Instinct, alongside the recent debut of ChatGPT’s Dots.

Google has a strong foundation for scaling these agentic efforts, as CEO Sundar Pichai noted at the event's start that Gemini currently boasts over 1 billion monthly active users. He also highlighted that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies are already utilizing Gemini Enterprise for work.

Leveraging its strong foothold in the corporate sector, Google intends to roll out the agent to businesses first, with a consumer rollout planned for a later stage.

Pichai explained that this phased approach will allow Google to address the complex challenges related to security, scale, and performance that accompany the launch of high-powered agents.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the new agent as one that can be assigned "objectives, not just instructions." This enables the AI to plan workflows, utilize custom skills and tools, and integrate with internal business systems to achieve its goals.

By default, the AI selects the optimal model to complete a task, though users retain the option to select a specific model. This includes third-party options, beginning with Anthropic's Claude models, with plans to expand the model picker to include open-source and private models in the future.

Users can submit requests accompanied by attachments such as files, folders, or project files. The agent connects to various business data and systems, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, and more.

Furthermore, the agent can securely connect and operate with any Model Context Protocol (MCP) server located within or outside the company's network.

Users can monitor the agent's activities via a "tasks inbox" interface, which displays the AI's thought process, delegation of tasks to subagents, loading of specialized skills, code, and overall progress.

A key feature is that the AI will maintain its own Workspace account, functioning as a colleague. It possesses its own email address and context, understanding team assignments, time zones, approval workflows, and calendar schedules. Users can interact with the agent by tagging it, emailing it, sharing files, or adding it to group chats. When executing actions, the agent generates an audit trail attributed to itself rather than a specific person.

The new agent is accessible across a wide range of platforms, including iOS and Android mobile devices, Windows and Mac desktops, the command line interface, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and Slack.

Early testers for the agent included the sportswear brand On, Shopify, and PayPal, with current Gemini Enterprise clients spanning large enterprises such as BNP Paribas, Bradesco, Merck, Orange Spain, Santee Cooper, SOMPO, Ulta Beauty, and Wesfarmers.

To assist businesses in managing costs, Google introduced new flexible spending options. These include multi-model orchestration, smart routing, and real-time spend caps designed to keep enterprise AI expenses under better control.
