On Thursday, Google and Intel announced a significant expansion of their multi-year partnership, confirming that Google Cloud will continue to leverage Intel's AI infrastructure and persist in their joint processor development initiatives.

This renewed agreement specifies Google Cloud's continued reliance on Intel's Xeon processors, including the newly introduced Xeon 6 chips, across critical AI, cloud computing, and inference workloads. Google's relationship with Intel's Xeon line spans several decades.

Furthermore, the partnership will deepen their joint efforts in developing custom Infrastructure Processing Units (IPUs), specialized chips designed to enhance data center efficiency by offloading and accelerating tasks typically handled by central processing units (CPUs).

Initiated in 2021, this particular chip development facet of their alliance will now concentrate on advanced custom ASIC-based IPUs.

Intel refrained from disclosing any financial specifics or pricing terms associated with this expanded deal.

This strategic expansion unfolds amidst a surging industry-wide demand for CPUs. While Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are primarily employed for developing and training artificial intelligence models, CPUs remain indispensable for executing AI models and underpinning broader AI infrastructure.

In an accompanying press release, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan emphasized, "AI is reshaping how infrastructure is built and scaled. Scaling AI requires more than accelerators — it requires balanced systems. CPUs and IPUs are central to delivering the performance, efficiency and flexibility modern AI workloads demand."

The increasing scarcity of these vital chips has prompted a growing number of companies to pivot their focus towards CPU development and procurement in recent months.

Illustrating this trend, SoftBank-owned Arm Holdings recently unveiled the Arm AGI CPU, marking the semiconductor giant's first self-produced chip, a move made in response to the prevailing global shortage of CPUs.
