A leaked Android update suggests Google is preparing to automate personal phone calls using its Gemini AI technology.

The tech giant is reportedly expanding its "Call for Me" functionality beyond business contexts to include personal interactions with friends and family. Android Authority discovered a "Gemini Calling" introductory screen within an APK teardown, revealing specific examples such as "Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late" and "Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner."

Based on these examples, even with this new expansion, the AI is likely to handle only basic, text-message-style communications. While the system probably will not manage full catch-up conversations with relatives, it could efficiently deliver short messages to individuals who prefer calling over texting or still rely on landlines.

Furthermore, Android Authority noted the discovery of "granular permissions" for Gemini actions within individual apps, including specific settings for phone call access. These settings would allow users to dictate which app capabilities Gemini can utilize, potentially offering an option to opt out of receiving automated incoming calls. However, as Android Authority pointed out, it remains uncertain whether Google will actually release this expanded feature or the granular permission settings publicly.
