Google introduces new travel planning capabilities within its AI Mode conversational search experience. Users can now utilize the tool to monitor flight prices, secure hotel reservations, and view trip costs in points or miles.

These developments suggest Google intends to market AI Mode as a virtual travel agent. The platform is evolving from a mere information retrieval tool to actively managing trip planning and booking logistics.

Users can specify their travel dates and destinations to AI Mode, which will retrieve the best options and current costs from a network of over 300 airlines and travel websites. To secure a reservation, users can build their itinerary directly within the interface. Alternatively, they can request price monitoring, such as asking "track these flight prices for me," and receive email alerts if rates fluctuate. This flight tracking feature is currently accessible in more than 180 countries.

Regarding accommodations, users can identify and reserve hotels through a dialogue with AI Mode. By outlining preferences and trip details, users receive a selection of options complete with reviews and essential details. Upon selecting a preferred hotel, users select the "Continue on Google" option to access integrated partners like hotel chains and travel sites. From there, they can finalize room selection, review cancellation policies, and complete the transaction using Google Pay. Google notes that the external booking platforms manage the actual reservation and customer service.

Hotel booking functionality is currently rolling out in the U.S. in English, with plans for a broader release over the coming weeks. The service partners include major entities such as Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

Additionally, Google announced that AI Mode can now display the cost of flights and hotels in loyalty points or miles. Users can request specific options, for example, "I want to travel from Atlanta to Miami using my AA miles," and the system will calculate the required miles for matching flights. This update is available globally.
