Google is launching two innovative tools for Gemini on Thursday, designed to appeal to users contemplating a switch in their preferred AI chatbot but hesitant to "retrain" a new system. The new "Import Memory" and "Import Chat History" features provide users with pre-written prompts to swiftly transfer all information their current AI has accumulated about them.
Utilizing the "Import Memory" tool involves a straightforward process: users copy a suggested prompt from Gemini, paste it into their former AI, and then transfer the previous AI's generated output back into Gemini. This method efficiently updates Gemini with the user's established preferences. For "Import Chat History," users request an export of their complete chat history from their prior AI, typically as a .zip file, which is then uploaded to Gemini, allowing them to seamlessly resume conversations where they left off.
In a related update, Google is also rebranding "past chats" within Gemini to "memory." While "Import Memory" and "Import Chat History" are being progressively rolled out to both free and paid consumer Gemini accounts, immediate availability across all platforms may vary. It is important to note that these new functionalities are currently excluded for users with business, enterprise, or under-18 accounts.
This development follows Anthropic's recent update to its own tool earlier this month, which enables the transfer of another AI's memory into Claude, employing a comparable strategy of prompt copy-pasting and output sharing. Concurrently, Google has also enhanced access to its Search Live AI feature on Thursday, introducing it alongside the new Gemini 3.1 Flash Live voice model. This new model is touted by Google to deliver "more natural and intuitive conversations" and significantly faster responses.
