An update on April 7 (10:30 PM PT) revealed modifications to the app's store listing, with references to an Android application removed. However, the listing also confirmed that an iOS keyboard integration is "coming soon."

Google quietly introduced "Google AI Edge Eloquent," an innovative offline-first dictation application for iOS, on Monday. This new offering positions itself to compete with established platforms such as Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow.

The application is available for free download. Once its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) models are installed, users can immediately begin dictating on their phone. The app provides live transcription, and upon pausing, it intelligently filters out common filler words like "um" and "ah," thereby polishing the text.

Below the transcribed content, users are presented with options such as "Key points," "Formal," "Short," and "Long" to transform the text according to their needs.

For enhanced privacy, users have the option to disable cloud mode, enabling local-only processing. When cloud mode is active, the app leverages cloud-based Gemini models for text refinement. Google AI Edge Eloquent can also import specific keywords, names, and jargon directly from a user's Gmail account, if desired, and allows for the addition of custom words to its vocabulary.

The app maintains a comprehensive history of transcription sessions, offering a search function to navigate through them. It can display details from the last session, including words dictated, the user's words-per-minute speed, and the total number of words spoken.

As per the company’s App Store description, "Google AI Edge Eloquent is an advanced dictation app engineered to bridge the gap between natural speech and professional, ready-to-use text. Unlike standard dictation software that transcribes stumbles and filler words verbatim, Eloquent utilizes AI to capture your intended meaning. It automatically edits out ‘ums,’ ‘uhs,’ and mid-sentence self-corrections, outputting clean, accurate prose."

While the app is currently exclusive to iOS, the App Store description initially referenced an Android version. (We have reached out to Google for further details and will update this report upon receiving a response.)

The description further outlined potential Android capabilities, highlighting "seamless Android integration" that would allow Eloquent to be set as a user's default keyboard for system-wide access across any text field. It also mentioned a floating button feature, similar to that used by Wispr Flow on Android, to facilitate easy access to transcription from anywhere.

The increasing sophistication of speech-to-text models has led to a surge in popularity for AI-powered transcription applications. With this experimental release, Google is actively engaging with this burgeoning trend, and a successful test could pave the way for enhanced transcription functionalities across the Android ecosystem as well.
