A significant new alliance has been forged between a prominent Hollywood studio and a leading technology powerhouse.
On Monday, Google DeepMind revealed a substantial $75 million investment, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, into the acclaimed independent film studio A24. Renowned for critically successful films such as “Marty Supreme,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and its recent blockbuster “Backrooms,” A24 is now embarking on what Google DeepMind describes as a “first-of-its-kind” partnership. This collaboration aims to develop advanced AI tools specifically for filmmaking, with Google DeepMind benefiting from “feedback and guidance from leading artists.” A24 has recently collaborated with notable talents including Timothée Chalamet and Anne Hathaway on various projects.
Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, articulated the vision behind this venture in a press release, stating, “We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them. By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”
Despite ongoing controversies surrounding the integration of artificial intelligence within Hollywood productions, A24 is not an outlier in exploring AI for creative processes. Earlier this year, Netflix announced its acquisition of Interpositive, a company founded by Ben Affleck that specializes in AI tools for filmmakers. Concurrently, Amazon’s MGM Studios established its own dedicated AI unit last year, focused on developing tools for both television and movie production.
