Google’s intelligent AI shopping cart is now rolling out in the United States, initially available exclusively within the Gemini app and Google Search.
Launched just in time for Black Friday and the holiday season, this tool, previously previewed at Google I/O in May, aims to help users stay organized and save money while shopping online. Users can access this 'Universal Cart' feature across the Gemini app and Google Search immediately.
As the name implies, this 'universal' digital cart allows users to consolidate products from various retailers into a single, unified space. It operates seamlessly across Google platforms, enabling users to collect items via the Gemini app or Google Search AI Mode and store them all in one place. Although Google has announced future plans to integrate the tool with Gmail and YouTube, no specific timeline has been provided.
The service keeps users informed by sending notifications regarding price drops and restocks for saved items, eliminating the need to manually monitor each retailer's site. Additionally, it can surface relevant promotional codes. Users have the flexibility to pay directly through Google Wallet or transfer items to individual merchant carts for checkout. Google Wallet integration also allows the system to analyze credit card perks to suggest the most advantageous payment method.
This launch occurs amidst a growing competitive landscape in AI-assisted shopping. Rivals such as OpenAI and Meta have already deployed agentic AI assistants capable of shopping on behalf of users, and Shopify has recently opened its platform to AI agents. Tech giants are racing to dominate this emerging market, driven by the belief that the future of online commerce will rely heavily on automation doing the heavy lifting for consumers.
