Sergey Brin Pushes Google AI Teams to Work Longer Hours for Faster Progress

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, has urged the company’s AI teams to intensify their efforts by working 60-hour weeks and coming into the office every weekday. In an internal memo, Brin emphasized the urgency of accelerating AI development, particularly in the race toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). He pointed out that while Google has made significant progress with the Gemini program and Google DeepMind, competition has increased, making it crucial to move faster. Brin also criticized the company’s AI systems for being overloaded with content filters, suggesting that the team should trust users more and reduce restrictions. His message aligns with similar sentiments expressed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who recently highlighted the importance of 2025 as a critical year for AI advancements. Pichai stressed that Google must act quickly to unlock AI’s full potential and address real-world problems, acknowledging that the stakes are high in this rapidly evolving landscape. Meanwhile, Google and other major tech firms are facing regulatory challenges in Europe. Risto Uuk, head of EU policy at the Future of Life Institute, discussed how big tech companies are pushing back against AI regulations, seeking changes to policies before committing to compliance. The Future of Life Institute previously advocated for a six-month pause on advanced AI model development to ensure safety measures were in place. Still, Uuk noted that many companies have not significantly increased their focus on AI safety. As the race to dominate AI continues, Google is under pressure to maintain its competitive edge. Brin’s push for a more aggressive approach reflects the company’s urgency in developing more advanced AI models while balancing regulatory and ethical concerns in an increasingly scrutinized industry.
