Google is introducing Personal Intelligence to Gemini AI within vehicles. Under this update, Gemini on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in can now access data across various Google applications, such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search.
Google provided an example of this functionality, noting that a user can ask Gemini about their flight status while driving. The assistant can retrieve the specific flight details from a confirmation message in Gmail and subsequently check the flight's current status. Additionally, users can request directions to a doctor's appointment or instruct the AI to locate a car wash using a photo taken previously and navigate to it.
While Google previously launched the Gemini assistant for Android Auto last year and expanded it to cars with Google built-in in April, this latest update focuses on deeper integration. Several automakers, including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar, have integrated Google built-in into newer models, allowing for native Android app support.
Google clarified that these app connections are only established if users enable the Personal Intelligence setting, and personalized responses are only shared when the phone is connected to the car. The company stated, "If you don't use Personal Intelligence, everything in the car still works: You can use navigation, listen to music, make calls, and ask questions, but the answers won't be tailored to you."
The Personal Intelligence feature is currently rolling out to Android Auto today, with support for cars featuring Google built-in expected in the coming months.
