A key new feature allows users to open source links directly alongside their AI chat interface. Rather than launching a new tab, clicking a source will now display the corresponding website side-by-side with AI Mode, enabling users to pose follow-up questions contextually about the page content.
Introduced last year, AI Mode functions as a chatbot-like search utility, integrated into a tab on the left side of Google’s search engine. Over the past year, Google has consistently augmented the tool's capabilities. Prior enhancements have included the ability to generate images of outfits and decor from user descriptions, visualize travel itineraries, and facilitate restaurant reservations. More recently, Google also increased the prominence of source links within AI Mode, addressing concerns regarding the potential impact of AI-powered search features on traffic to news publishers and other websites.
Further improving its utility, AI Mode in Chrome, across both desktop and mobile platforms, now allows users to select specific open tabs as a direct source for information, eliminating the need to paste individual links. To activate this, users can simply click the "plus" button within AI Mode or Google's search box, which will present a list of recent tabs for selection. AI Mode will then process and answer queries based on the content of these chosen tabs. Google also notes the added flexibility to incorporate images or files into these targeted searches.
These latest updates to AI Mode are currently accessible to users in the United States, with a global rollout anticipated "soon."
