Google continues to integrate artificial intelligence into its email platform, Gmail. The technology giant recently unveiled an enhancement to its "AI Inbox" functionality, introducing conversational AI capabilities. This development means users will be able to pose questions to Gmail about their inbox content using natural language, rather than relying on traditional search keywords.

The company states that this new feature, powered by Gemini AI and named Gmail Live, is designed to facilitate rapid retrieval of information hidden within a user's inbox.

For instance, imagine needing details about an upcoming flight, the precise time of a dentist appointment, the access code for an Airbnb rental, or specific information regarding an event at a child's school.

Previously, locating such details typically involved entering specific keywords, an email address, or a domain into the search bar to refine results. This method, however, could often prove inefficient, particularly when a search term appeared in numerous messages, complicating the discovery process.

"Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, respond to follow-up questions, and pivot if you need to interrupt it," explained Devanshi Bhandari, Product Lead for Gmail, during a press briefing preceding Google I/O, the company's annual developer conference where the feature made its public debut.

This initiative represents another effort by Google to demonstrate how its advanced AI technology can deliver tangible, real-world enhancements to products utilized by millions globally. This comes at a time when skepticism regarding AI's practical value is growing outside the tech sector, fueled by concerns over new data center constructions and their impact on energy costs.

Highlighting a solution as straightforward as simplifying the retrieval of misplaced emails—a common frustration almost universally experienced—could serve as a practical and beneficial application for AI, a sentiment Google evidently hopes will resonate.

During the demonstration for reporters, Bhandari showcased Gmail Live by posing a series of questions pertaining to inbox content, including details about a child's show-and-tell project, a class trip, and hotel and flight information for a journey to Detroit. Much like interacting with standalone AI chatbots such as Gemini or ChatGPT, Gmail users can articulate these queries verbally using natural language, and the chatbot will provide responses.

Bhandari further highlighted that the demo illustrated Gmail Live's capacity to discern subtle differences, such as between "field trip" and "trip," and its ability to seamlessly transition between disparate topics. Furthermore, the AI can extract precise details from emails, like a hotel room number, and even infer the individuals being referenced, even if their names are not explicitly stated.

The company also indicated that comparable voice-activated technology is slated for integration into Google Keep, its popular note-taking and to-do list application.

It is important to note that Gmail Live will function as an additional option rather than a replacement for Gmail's existing search functionality.

This approach suggests Google may have drawn lessons from its previous experience with Google Photos, where an AI-powered search "upgrade" garnered significant user backlash, leading the company to subsequently revert the feature and make AI usage optional following numerous complaints.

Beyond these conversational AI features, Gmail is also set to receive other new functionalities, such as ready-to-send draft emails, immediate access to files, and enhanced to-do management, allowing users to mark individual tasks as completed.

Furthermore, the "AI Inbox" experience, initially introduced earlier this year, will extend its availability beyond Google AI Ultra subscribers to include Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers. This feature provides users with a consolidated overview of pending tasks and important items buried within their inbox, all presented on a single page.

The voice-powered Gmail Live feature, however, is scheduled for a rollout later this summer and will initially be exclusively available to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
