World, a venture co-founded by Sam Altman, is dedicated to developing "proof of human" technologies—identity verification tools essential for an internet increasingly saturated with AI-generated content of questionable veracity. The irony is not lost that Altman's other prominent company, OpenAI, has been widely associated with the proliferation of much of this digital material, though it could be argued that he foresaw this challenge when establishing World.
This week, Tools for Humanity (TFH), the startup behind World, unveiled the beta version of a new verification tool. This particular innovation is designed to bolster agentic commerce, a rapidly expanding practice involving the use of AI programs to autonomously browse the web and execute purchases on behalf of a user.
An increasing number of consumers are leveraging AI agents to navigate websites and complete transactions for them. While this trend promises significant automated convenience, it simultaneously introduces the potential for new forms of fraud, widespread spam, and other large-scale internet abuses.
On Tuesday, World announced what it presents as its solution: AgentKit. This software development tool is tailored for commercial websites, enabling them to integrate a novel verification system that confirms a genuine human is indeed behind an AI agent's purchasing decisions.
AgentKit's operation is predicated on World ID, the cornerstone of TFH's verification ecosystem. The most secure iteration of this ID is generated through a scan of a user's eyes via World's proprietary Orb device. The Orb transforms an iris pattern into a unique, encrypted digital code—the verified World ID—which then facilitates access to TFH's array of services through the company's World app.
AgentKit allows for the integration of a user’s World ID into the recently launched x402 protocol, a payment system. Developed collaboratively by Coinbase and Cloudflare, x402 is a blockchain-based open standard engineered to enable automated computer programs to transact directly online with one another, thereby eliminating the need for human intervention at each step. To utilize AgentKit, users simply register their AI agents with their World ID. This connection then communicates to websites—via the x402 system—that a distinct and verified human has approved the agent's purchasing decisions.
In an official statement, Tools for Humanity affirmed, “AgentKit is built as a complementary extension to the x402 v2 protocol, in coordination with Coinbase.” The company further elaborated that this integration is structured to allow "any website already using x402 can enable proof of unique human verification alongside (or instead of) micropayments."
Speaking with TechCrunch, Tiago Sada, TFH's Chief Product Officer, likened AgentKit's new functionality to granting an agent “power of attorney.” He explained that by confirming an AI program is operating on a specific user's behalf, websites gain the ability to determine the trustworthiness of transactions initiated by these agents. Sada asserted, “What the World ID badge tells you is that someone is a real and a unique human,” while also clarifying that websites maintain the option to decline or block users they perceive as acting maliciously.
AgentKit is currently being offered in a beta phase to developers, with the expectation that ongoing feedback will contribute to its refinement over time. Sada also highlighted that, for consumers, a verified World ID obtained through an Orb scan will be a prerequisite for utilizing this verification capability.
This initiative arrives at an opportune moment, as leading e-commerce platforms and financial institutions are increasingly adopting agentic commerce. Notably, Amazon and MasterCard integrated automated purchasing functionalities into their systems last year, and Google recently unveiled its own protocol to support this burgeoning trend. As this sector expands, the demand for robust safeguards to ensure reliability and stability will undoubtedly intensify. World is strategically positioning itself to become the primary provider of such essential stability.
