Perplexity, the AI-focused search startup has launched its native Mac app, presenting users a new way to access AI-powered search directly from their desktops. With this launch, Perplexity aims to compete with other popular AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Quora’s Poe, which combines different large language models.
The Mac version makes it easy to access the Perplexity search using keyboard shortcuts. You can quickly enable voice mode, upload files, or use voice dictation, enhancing convenience for users who prefer audio-based interactions.
Additionally, The new app allows you to ask follow-up questions and easily browse your conversation history right from the sidebar. Perplexity also expanded its offerings last year by launching apps for both iOS and Android.
You can enjoy the Mac app for free, with an optional Perplexity Pro subscription at $20 per month or $200 per year. This Pro plan offers over 300 advanced searches monthly, providing more in-depth results than the free quick search option.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Perplexity is looking to raise $500 million in funding, which could double its value to $8 billion. However, the startup is facing challenges after The New York Times sent a cease-and-desist letter earlier this month, charging it with scraping content and plagiarism.
As Perplexity works through these issues, it will need to tackle these legal concerns while trying to secure the funding needed for its growth in the competitive AI market.
