With the advent of "Gemini season," Google is unveiling a suite of new Gemini features during its pre-I/O Android showcase, many designed to empower phones to operate more autonomously on your behalf. Gemini will soon be integrated into more facets of the Android experience, including Chrome for Android, autofill suggestions, and directly within various applications, offering users greater control over its presence.
Introducing a new branding, Google has coined "Gemini Intelligence." According to Ben Greenwood, Google’s director of Android experiences, this initiative "brings the very best of Gemini to our most advanced Android devices." This new moniker encompasses a combination of existing and forthcoming Gemini functionalities, seemingly earmarked for premium Android smartphones, such as the anticipated Galaxy S26 series.
Among these "best of Gemini" features is enhanced task automation. Already available on select recent Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, this capability allows Gemini to interact with specific applications on your behalf. Previously, its scope was limited to a few rideshare and food delivery services. Google indicates that this will soon change, with task automation expanding to support a broader spectrum of applications.
Furthermore, Gemini will gain multimodality. While previous iterations relied solely on voice or text prompts to guide its actions, users will now be able to incorporate screenshots or photos into their requests. For instance, you could provide Gemini with a screenshot of a grocery list from your notes app, and it would then add those items directly to your online shopping cart, provided your Android phone supports Gemini Intelligence.
Another entirely new feature under the Gemini Intelligence umbrella is "Create My Widget." Google's official blog post describes this as a foundational step toward "generative UI." It enables users to articulate their desired widget functionality using natural language, allowing the AI to construct a custom widget. Examples provided by Google include a personalized weather widget for a cyclist, displaying wind speed and precipitation at a glance, and a dashboard for specific recipe suggestions, such as "three high-protein meal prep recipes every week." These custom widgets will also extend their utility to Wear OS, making them accessible on smartwatches.
While seemingly straightforward, this widget innovation holds significant potential. Considering widgets as miniature, customizable applications that can be dynamically generated onto a phone's homescreen, the concept becomes more intriguing. This could indeed represent a nascent step towards an interface that can spontaneously create and adapt itself. The I/O keynote may offer further insights into the broader vision for "generative UI."
Google is also extending Gemini features from the desktop version of Chrome to its Android application. This will manifest as a dedicated Gemini button within Chrome, allowing users to share webpage content and pose questions to Gemini directly within the browser. Subscribers to Google's AI Pro or Ultra plans will additionally benefit from "auto browse," an AI-powered assistant capable of completing tasks such as booking appointments. This functionality is scheduled for a late June rollout.
Optionally, Gemini will also integrate into Android's autofill capabilities. Users can choose to connect Gemini to assist with form completion, leveraging its "Personal Intelligence" to draw relevant information from sources like Google Photos and Gmail. This could theoretically include retrieving details such as a license plate number from your photo library. This blend of convenience and deeper data access may prompt varying user reactions. Ben Greenwood confirms that Gemini Intelligence features will "roll out in waves as they become ready throughout this year," with Galaxy and Pixel phones slated to receive the initial updates this summer.
