At its annual I/O 2026 event, Google unveiled significant advancements for Gemini, introducing a refreshed aesthetic alongside powerful new agentic capabilities.
During the Tuesday keynote, Google announced a series of major updates for its Gemini application. While users will immediately notice a comprehensive redesign, Google is also integrating two innovative AI models and is actively piloting an always-on AI model designed to autonomously complete tasks on your behalf.
The following details the most impactful Gemini updates revealed at I/O.
The Gemini app is set to receive Google’s latest flagship AI model, Gemini 3.5 Flash. Google highlights this new model as being notably faster and more efficient than its leading counterparts. It further promises the generation of "richer, more interactive" web user interfaces and graphics. Furthermore, Gemini 3.5 Flash represents a "major leap forward" in developing highly functional AI agents, outperforming Gemini 3.1 Pro in both coding and agentic benchmarks, according to Google's assessments.
This release marks the inaugural addition to the Gemini 3.5 family of models, with Google anticipating the launch of 3.5 Pro in the coming month.
Beyond the new model, Google is giving the Gemini app a substantial visual overhaul, guided by its "Neural Expressive" design language. This revitalized application features fluid animations, a more vivid color palette, updated typography, and incorporates haptic feedback when users interact with in-app buttons.
Google has also refined the presentation of Gemini’s responses. Crucial information will now be prominently displayed at the top, enriched with imagery, interactive timelines, narrated videos, and dynamic graphics. The transition between typing text in the Gemini app and using the voice-enabled Gemini Live mode has been streamlined, with new regional dialects soon to be introduced for Live mode. The "Neural Expressive" redesign is progressively rolling out across the Gemini app on the web, Android, and iOS platforms.
A groundbreaking new model is being introduced to the Gemini app, with the ultimate vision to "create anything from any input." The initial offering in this series, Gemini Omni Flash, will first enable users to generate videos by combining images, audio, video, and text inputs. Google asserts that Gemini Omni can produce lifelike scenes with enhanced physical accuracy and possesses the ability to "reason" about subsequent actions.
Adding to this, a new Avatars feature allows users to produce videos featuring a digital rendition of themselves, utilizing their own voice. The output generated by Gemini Omni can be refined and edited through conversational interactions within the Gemini app. Gemini Omni Flash is being deployed for Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers within the Gemini app and Google Flow. It will also be made available at no cost on YouTube Shorts and through the YouTube Create App.
Google is also launching Gemini Spark, an "always-on" AI agent designed to execute tasks in the background while users engage in other activities. Gemini Spark shares conceptual similarities with OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent platform that gained significant traction within the tech industry earlier this year.
Its capabilities include sending emails, meticulously scanning monthly credit card statements for concealed subscription fees, or generating concise summaries of meeting notes. Gemini Spark operates on Gemini 3.5 Flash and boasts connectivity with Google Workspace applications such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides, as well as popular third-party services like Canva, Instacart, and OpenTable. Furthermore, this AI agent can access local files on macOS through the Gemini app.
The rollout of Gemini Spark begins this week with trusted testers, followed by a beta launch for US-based Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
Another significant addition to the Gemini app is Daily Brief, an AI-powered agent. This feature aggregates information from applications connected to Gemini, compiling a personalized summary of the user's day, including upcoming events from Calendar and recent updates from Gmail.
Google states that Daily Brief will intelligently organize and prioritize its rundowns based on individual user goals. It also provides a feedback mechanism, allowing users to rate briefings with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Daily Brief is scheduled to become available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in the US starting this Tuesday.
