Google is rolling out a significant update to its Home app, enhancing the interaction with its Gemini AI assistant to make smart home control "more natural and reliable," according to this week’s release notes. A standout new feature allows users to articulate their desired lighting ambiance through descriptive language. For instance, you can now simply ask Gemini to create lighting that evokes "the color of the ocean," and the AI will intelligently select the appropriate hue.

Beyond aesthetic adjustments, this update extends to more intuitive control over appliances and climate settings. Users can now employ precise and natural phrasing, such as instructing Gemini to "preheat the smart oven to 350 degrees" or to set specific humidity levels. Google has also refined Gemini’s ability to accurately identify diverse devices, like "distinguishing between a ‘lamp’ and a ‘light," which promises faster and more accurate request fulfillment. Furthermore, children with supervised Google accounts will now be able to access Gemini for Home.

These latest improvements build upon recent advancements, including the introduction of "Live Search" for cameras earlier this month and an enhanced capacity for Gemini to comprehend conversational context.

In parallel, Google has announced an update to Gemini Live, its feature enabling dynamic, back-and-forth conversations with the smart assistant. Gemini Live’s news summaries are now "deeper and more interactive" across smart displays and speakers. Users can engage by asking questions like "What’s the latest news?" or "Catch me up on tech news" during a conversation to receive comprehensive, detailed summaries. All these new functionalities are currently in the process of rolling out to users.
