After a period characterized by incremental enhancements, Google is placing a significant wager on its Gemini AI to fundamentally redefine the smart speaker experience. This past Wednesday, the company unveiled its inaugural audio device engineered specifically for Gemini: the $99.99 Google Home Speaker.
This new Google Home model marks the tech giant's first standalone smart speaker introduction since the Nest Audio in September 2020. That earlier device emerged when smart speakers were primarily perceived as convenient controllers for smart home ecosystems and music playback. They notably lacked the sophisticated intelligence of contemporary AI chatbots, often requiring precise command phrasing to function correctly.
The Google Home Speaker is set to revolutionize this paradigm, enabling users to interact using natural language requests and even formulate complex, multi-step commands with intuitive phrasing. For instance, one could instruct the speaker to “turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp,” or combine actions such as “dim the kitchen lights, play some relaxing music, and set a timer for 20 minutes.”
Furthermore, Gemini's advanced understanding allows for mid-sentence corrections, eliminating the need to rephrase entire requests. Google highlights this capability with an example: a user could say, “turn off the coffee maker…I mean, turn it on!” and the AI would process the intended command appropriately.
Aesthetically, the device maintains a familiar design, featuring a 3D-knit textile wrapping and a rounded form factor measuring 3.4 x 4.2 inches. For the U.S. market, it will be available in Jade and Berry, supplementing the Hazel and Porcelain options offered internationally. A new ring light positioned at the base provides visual cues, indicating whether the speaker is actively listening, processing, or responding.
However, access to all of the new device's advanced AI functionalities will not be complimentary.
Instead, Google plans to offer Google Home Premium subscription plans, priced at $10 per month or $100 annually, for users seeking to unlock more robust AI capabilities. These premium features include Gemini Live, which facilitates more natural, free-flowing conversations initiated by the command “Hey Google, let’s chat.” Home Premium also provides enhanced integration with Nest cameras, allowing users to inquire about and comprehend captured activity, or receive concise summaries of events that occurred in their absence.
The appeal of these premium capabilities, especially when many core Gemini features are accessible without a subscription, and whether they sufficiently justify an additional monthly fee, remains to be determined.
To encourage adoption, Google will provide a six-month complimentary trial of these advanced features before prompting users to subscribe. Should this strategy succeed, Google will have effectively revitalized its smart speaker portfolio with generative AI, simultaneously establishing a revenue stream for these technological innovations.
The device is currently available for pre-order and is scheduled to commence shipping later this month.
