Google’s Gemini AI is advancing significantly, moving closer to functioning as a comprehensive personal assistant. This enhanced capability will first debut on select Pixel 10 phones and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, empowering Gemini to independently manage tasks such as ordering an Uber or compiling a DoorDash delivery.

This functionality, termed task automation, initiates with a simple voice or text command to Gemini—for example, “Get me an Uber to the Palace of Fine Arts.” Gemini then seamlessly launches the relevant application within a virtual window on the user's device, meticulously navigating through each step of the process. Users retain full visibility, with the option to observe the automation unfold, intervene to halt or take manual control if desired, or allow Gemini to operate in the background. The assistant is designed to prompt the user for input when a choice is required between multiple options, or to inform them if a requested item is unavailable. Upon completion of the ride booking or order compilation, Gemini will alert the user for a final review and submission.

Sameer Samat, President of the Android ecosystem, characterizes this development as a pivotal step in transforming Android from a mere operating system into an "intelligence system." Furthermore, these app automation capabilities are not exclusive to Gemini; Samat indicates that the ability for an AI assistant to automate tasks will be integrated into Android’s forthcoming major release, suggesting more details will emerge with revelations about Android 17.

The underlying mechanics of how Gemini executes complex requests, such as assembling a food order, involve sophisticated AI. Demonstrations observed illustrate Gemini 3's capacity to open an application, apply reasoning to navigate through various steps, identify correct selections, and even consider alternative choices. While this autonomous navigation is a core feature, app developers also have the option to expose specific actions through Google’s MCP or Android’s app functions framework, with Google having established the foundation for the latter since at least 2024. In scenarios where neither of these frameworks is utilized, Gemini is designed to independently analyze and interpret the app interface to achieve the desired outcome. Samat clarifies, “We see it as a series of technology stacks, none of which the user really cares about — they just want it to happen.” He emphasizes, “We think it’s important to support all of those, so that over time you can have an assistant that can complete all kinds of different tasks for you.”

This evolution, where Gemini assumes control of app interactions on behalf of the user, naturally raises questions regarding its impact on app developers. Concerns might arise about potentially reduced direct user engagement or the loss of opportunities to present promotional offers, such as Uber’s prompts for Uber One subscriptions. Addressing this, Samat states unequivocally, “This technology is happening,” framing the challenge for the developer community as, “…how do we figure out the right ways to embrace it together?”

The exploration of this advanced future is set to commence imminently. Initially, task automation will be confined to a select group of applications, including Uber and Grubhub. This early preview will be rolled out in the United States and Korea, exclusively for the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, alongside the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL devices.
