Frore Systems, an eight-year-old semiconductor startup, has successfully secured $143 million in a Series D funding round, propelling its valuation to $1.64 billion. The round was led by MVP Ventures, as announced by the company on Monday.

This latest infusion of capital brings Frore's total funding to $340 million. Notably, Frore does not manufacture chips itself; instead, it specializes in developing advanced liquid cooling systems designed to enhance their performance. Founded by two former Qualcomm engineers, the company's initial technological focus was on creating air-cooling solutions for smartphones and other compact, fanless electronic devices.

The strategic pivot towards chip-centric cooling solutions was inspired by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Approximately two years ago, Huang received a demonstration of Frore's technology, as reported by Bloomberg, and subsequently suggested that the company explore developing liquid-cooling options, which he identified as an emerging necessity for AI chips and systems. Following this guidance, Frore developed and released products compatible with various Nvidia chips and boards, and has also extended its product development to support Qualcomm and AMD platforms.

The AI semiconductor sector continues to be a highly attractive area for investment. This is evidenced by the emergence of other new unicorns in the field, such as Nvidia competitor Positron, which achieved a $1 billion valuation in February, and Recursive Intelligence, which debuted with an impressive $4 billion valuation. Additionally, Eridu recently launched with a $200 million Series A round (though it chose not to disclose its valuation) to focus on building innovative AI networking chips.

Key investors participating in Frore's recent Series D round include Fidelity, Mayfield, Addition, Qualcomm Ventures, and Alumni Ventures, among others.
