The scope of investigations into Grok, xAI's artificial intelligence, is broadening significantly, with Paris prosecutors having summoned both Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for testimony. This escalation follows a recent raid on X's Paris office, conducted on Tuesday by the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit alongside Europol and French police. These summons for hearings were initially reported by Reuters to have taken place in April, as part of a wider investigation that expanded in July to specifically encompass Grok.
Initiated last year, the comprehensive investigation is scrutinizing various serious allegations against both X and Grok. These include complicity in the possession and distribution of child pornography, along with the denial of crimes against humanity, specifically relating to Holocaust denial content. Furthermore, the inquiry is examining claims that X has been manipulating its algorithmic processes and illegally extracting user data.
Simultaneously, the UK's Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced its own formal investigation on Tuesday. This separate inquiry targets X and xAI, focusing on Grok's potential to generate harmful sexualized image and video content. This new probe runs parallel to another ongoing investigation in the UK by Ofcom, which also provided an update on Tuesday. Ofcom stated it is not currently investigating xAI, but is actively gathering and analyzing evidence to determine whether X has committed any legal breaches.
These multiple investigations have been prompted by a proliferation of nonconsensual sexualized deepfakes, reportedly generated by xAI’s Grok, which have circulated widely across the X platform. This persistent issue has continued for several weeks, despite X's assertions that the feature responsible has been restricted.
X did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding these developments.
