Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman have unveiled their latest venture, Luffu, an AI-powered startup dedicated to empowering families with proactive health monitoring. The company is developing an "intelligent family care system" that will initially launch as a mobile application before expanding to include dedicated hardware devices.
Two years after their departure from Google, Park and Friedman are leveraging artificial intelligence to alleviate the significant mental burden associated with caregiving. This initiative comes at a crucial time, as a recent report indicates that approximately 63 million, or nearly one in four U.S. adults, are currently family caregivers, marking a substantial 45% increase over the past decade.
Luffu's core functionality relies on AI operating in the background to seamlessly collect and organize family health information. It learns daily patterns and highlights significant changes, enabling families to remain informed and address potential wellbeing concerns promptly.
James Park elaborated on his motivation, stating, "At Fitbit, we focused on personal health—but after Fitbit, health for me became bigger than just thinking about myself. I was caring for my parents from across the country, trying to piece together my mom’s health care across various portals and providers, with a language barrier that made it hard to get complete, timely context from her about doctor visits. I didn’t want to constantly check in, and she didn’t want to feel monitored. Luffu is the product we wished existed—to stay on top of our family’s health, know what changed and when to step in—without hovering."
The founders observe that while today's consumer health market is saturated with tools for individual wellness, the reality of health management is often a shared responsibility among partners, children, parents, pets, and caregivers. Essential family health data is frequently fragmented across myriad sources, including various devices, online portals, calendars, attachments, spreadsheets, and physical documents.
With Luffu, users will gain the ability to comprehensively track details for their entire family, encompassing health statistics, dietary information, medications, symptoms, lab results, doctor appointments, and more. Health data can be conveniently logged using voice commands, text input, or photographs. The system proactively monitors for changes, providing valuable insights and alerts, such as unusual vital signs or shifts in sleep patterns.
The duo shared that users will be able to pose natural language questions regarding their family's health, such as "Is Dad’s new meal plan affecting his blood pressure?" or "Did someone give the dog his medication?"
Eric Friedman added, "We designed Luffu to capture the details as life happens, keep family members updated and surface what matters at the right time—so caregiving feels more coordinated and less chaotic."
