Ahead of Apple’s eagerly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Bloomberg has unveiled leaked renders providing a glimpse into Apple’s forthcoming AI enhancements for the iPhone. These upgrades reportedly include a dedicated Siri application designed to directly compete with leading AI chatbots like ChatGPT, alongside a deep integration of Siri’s new functionalities throughout the operating system.
The visual representations were meticulously crafted by Bloomberg, drawing upon insights and information gathered from its confidential sources.
While the familiar method of activating Siri by pressing a button will persist in iOS 27, the animated response and interaction will now elegantly emanate from the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. This distinctive black, pill-shaped area at the top of the screen currently hosts Live Activities, providing real-time updates and interactive displays from applications directly on the Home Screen. This established activation method is expected to be ideal for quick voice commands or straightforward searches, mirroring current user habits.
However, an innovative new mode is poised to make Siri-powered search more accessible by leveraging users’ ingrained muscle memory for swiping down to access Spotlight Search. This built-in utility unifies search results from both the device and the web. The downward swipe gesture will continue to open the search interface, but these queries will now be powered by an AI-enhanced Siri, incorporating a re-engineered AI model that utilizes Google’s Gemini AI technology for superior intelligence.
From this unified interface, iPhone users will be able to perform a wide array of tasks, including searching, launching applications, initiating messages, inquiring about weather, scheduling calendar appointments, searching notes, and triggering app shortcuts, as reported by Bloomberg. The results will be presented in a refined, card-style interface featuring formatted text, also emerging gracefully from the Dynamic Island.
Apple’s strategic approach to AI bears a striking resemblance to its previous multi-billion-dollar partnership with Google, which established Google as the default search engine on the iPhone. Just as developing a search engine from the ground up was never part of Apple’s core strategy, AI presents a similar challenge: its development is currently too resource-intensive and complex to undertake independently. Consequently, Apple is collaborating with external partners for immediate AI solutions desired by users, while simultaneously developing its own advanced models, including on-device (local) AI. This approach allows Apple to reinforce its strong privacy stance by processing data locally, without needing to play catch-up in the broader AI race.
Bloomberg further indicates the existence of a new, standalone Siri application, a development previously reported. This app is specifically engineered to rival prominent chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. It will offer functionalities like surfacing past chat history and enabling users to upload documents and photos, in addition to text-based inputs.
As always, Apple’s unparalleled scale remains a significant advantage. While ChatGPT currently boasts 900 million weekly active users, Apple’s vast install base across all devices—not limited to iPhones—stands at an impressive 2.5 billion. This enormous reach provides the company with an unmatched opportunity to introduce AI capabilities to a massive global audience, many of whom have yet to adopt standalone AI tools.
