First Look at Midjourney's Medical Scanner AI Raises Many Questions

A recently released video provides an in-depth look at Midjourney’s innovative hardware, yet it offers limited substantiation for the company’s ambitious claims regarding its potential to revolutionize the medical field. The AI startup, widely recognized for its generative image capabilities, has unveiled more details about its futuristic medical scanner, though concrete proof of its efficacy remains largely unaddressed.

The nearly 20-minute behind-the-scenes tour, presented by tech YouTuber and Midjourney engineer Marcin Plaza, showcases the company's "dunk-tank" ultrasound scanner. This device is slated for deployment in spas, with the aspiration of transforming medicine through cost-effective, high-resolution, and radiation-free imaging. Plaza candidly described the scanner’s construction, noting it comprises numerous ultrasound probes "hacked apart and slapped on a glorified hot tub with an elevator in it," all connected to readily available computers and Raspberry Pis.

While the video primarily highlights the hardware and the dedicated team behind its development, it noticeably sidesteps the intricate physics and imaging challenges that experts initially raised when Midjourney first announced the project. These experts, speaking to The Verge, expressed skepticism about Midjourney's ability to overcome the long-standing limitations inherent to ultrasound technology, which has been in use for decades. They questioned whether the company could truly deliver the detailed images it promises at the suggested scale and speed.

In response to regulatory complexities, Midjourney has emphasized its intention to launch the scanner as a wellness product focused on body composition, rather than as a diagnostic medical device. This strategic positioning allows the company to bypass the rigorous FDA clearance and clinical trials typically required for medical devices. Tom Calloway, Midjourney’s head of medical, reiterated this approach in the video, stating that the focus on body composition would enable the company to "speedrun" and launch promptly once testing is complete. Nevertheless, the video’s narrative continues to heavily employ medical terminology, posing questions about the potential applications for physicians with access to frequent, longitudinal scans.

Calloway appeared unfazed by any potential confusion, asserting, “I don’t think there’s anything to really clarify,” while promising regular progress updates via blogs. Concurrently, CEO David Holz underscored Midjourney’s investor-free status as a source of autonomy, remarking, “No one can tell me not to do it,” thereby affirming the company's freedom to pursue the scanner project without external influence.
